Designing with EN 1995 (Eurocode 5)

Eurocode 5 is based on a limit state philosophy as opposed to the permissible stress approach previously used in national Codes of Practice for timber design.

The limit state system starts with characteristic values of materials to which the designer applies factors to take account of safety, load duration, environmental conditions etc.  This is in contrast to the permissible stress approach where the published values already had safety factors applied.  As a consequence, characteristic values are higher than permissible stress values.

It can be used in conjunction with the following standards:

EN 1990: 2002 Eurocode – Basis of design

EN 1991 Eurocode 1: actions on structures

EN 1998 Eurocode 8: for building in seismic regions

ENs for construction products relevant to timber structures (for example.  EN 636 (plywood), EN 300 (OSB)  & EN 14373 (LVL).

National Annex NA (informative) to EN 1995-1-1: 2004 + A1 : 2008, Eurocode 5 : Design of timber structures – Part 1-1 ; General – Common rules and rules for buildings

This gives alternative procedures, values and recommendations with notes indicating where national choices have been made.  These values are known as Nationally Determined Parameters and are only for use with the geographical bounds of a specific member state.
